Someone informed me that the better speeds of CDMA2000-EVDO rev. A will be provided by a firmware upgrade to the CCU-650 USB modem, and not by the CCU-680 as believed before. I have not heard anymore information from that side.
(Update: There is a post from C-motech on this blog, it states that the ccu-650 is indeed not upgradeable to rev a through a firmware upgrade.)

The CCU-680 is available NOW in Phuket @ 10,999 baht. The monthly subscription is 840 Baht. I believe all prices are plus VAT (7%). Strangely, since the service started I’ve noticed an increase in speed with my old 580 aircard - perhaps there’s less subscribers to it now

The installation routine and troubleshooting procedures should be the same as this comparable model: CCU-680 / CDU-680 /CNU-680 installation and troubleshooting issues. The installation is pretty straightforward, all instructions and drivers are contained on a flashdrive within the card itself. You will most certainly need a Y-cable sucking the juice from two USB ports each delivering 5 volts rather than just 1 port of 5 volt for these revision A cards. I am pretty sure the CCU-680 card will be delivered with a USB Y-cable.

I called CAT today, and they said that the ccu-650 would not be firmware upgradable to the ccu-680, and being that CAT appears to be selling the ccu-680 for 10,999 baht…I’d guess my hopes that I could utilize Rev A with a ccu-650 are diminishing. Any updates on this? Who had originally told you that ccu-650 would be firmware upgradable to Rev A?

He also said he would import some of those from the Ukraine, i was thinking about checking this information with C-Motech at some time, but never got around to it.
C-motech would be the real source of information about the capabilities of the chips inside the units.

I Just went to the store to get some more info on the “CCU-680 EVDO Rev A” but im a mac user (Leopard) and she was very usure that ill work, can anyone confirm that this device will work on Leopard?

Yes, i can confirm that the CCU-680 / CDU-680 will work on both 10.4 and 10.5 of MacosX.
the 840 service fee, is that something different specifically for Rev A?
Can someone who has the 680 please give me the rtt ping times to the first hop, I’m consideirng upgrading to take advantage of VoIP. With Rev 0 my real-world ping times are 200ms to the first hop.
Anyone found the 680 anywhere else besides phuket?
Mattfs: What VOIP technology will you take advantage of using the CCU-680?
My educated guess is that the CCU-680 will be more than enough for skype, and just about enough for most SIP based technologies.
I used a SIP phone from a Norwegian provider about 3-4 years ago on an ADSL line in Phuket.
I think the line at that time was somewhere between 512kbps to 1 mbit.
And the latency to Norway where my SIP phone provider was located counted 800ms and more.
And it worked quite well at that time with those limited numbers.
During the tsunami i had 2 phones on that line working simultaneously to serve survivors wanting to call home when the normal phone network was down.
Aswell as at the same time sharing the line with several other clients within the same apartment building.
Also a tip when checking ping times is to make sure to send frames of 1500 bytes and not the default.
This will show you the real “production” latency times.

Can you bring one by this coming Sunday morning? That way a bunch of folks will be able to try it, and we can compare speeds with the AirCard 580 and CCU-650.

Hi all.. I bought the CCU680 and it’s working very well.. I’ve red that it can work also with LINUX (I’ve UBUNTU distro) HOW!? please, if You know how to make it vorking whit Linux, let me know also, because I’m using Only Linux now.. and when my Adsl ISP (TOT) is down… I cannot use it…

CAT telecom has not provided any Linux connecting scripts on their delivered CCU-680.
I was able to download from the “Franklin” website.
I edited the default script so that it includes usernames and passwords used for CAT telecom.
I do not have any ubuntu installation myself, so i am unable to try myself at this time.
Please inform me of any success or failure.
You can download what you need from here: CCU-680 Ubuntu
Unzip the Zipfile to your desktop and you will find the instructions inside.
The instructions are:
Copy the Linux Folder from your device to your Desktop
Open terminal
cd to Desktop/Linux
Run “sudo ./connect”
Enter root password
Device will switch to modem mode and attempt to connect.
Press Ctrl-C twice to disconnnect

Following what was the feedback from Linux:
(Note that the txt instruction files, “Linux connect steps_CDU680″ refers to the CDU680, NOT CCU680… but I don’t know the difference..)

Yes i am aware that the CCU-680 and the CDU-680 does have some firmware differences inside.
And on my macintosh box the CDU-680 branded connection manager does all of my CCU-680 connection and hardware handling.
But then after seeing you trying to make a connection in Linux, there seems to be no such luck with the Linux software.
Some linux based router hardware out there however does support the CCU-680.
You might also want to try “NDISWRAPPER”.
This is originally a project created for 802.11a/b/g style network.
It is a translation layer so that windows wireless networking devices will work on Linux based on their windows driver.
It is reported that many other devices work aswell, and not only 802.11a/b/g devices.
I have mailed a friend of mine which sells some of these linux based routers if he would be so kind as to provide additional information.

My idea was this, installing the driver through ndiswrapper might create a
new device within the /dev directory.
Then you could use a program such as gppp, kppp vwdial or another dialup
program to make a dialup connection through that device.
Guess its abit of a longshot.
This is on my list of things to do.

Hi all… Finally, I’ve got a feedback from C-Motec: They sent to me a Linux_driver (unlikely for Ubuntu 7.04 and Ubuntu 7.10…. I’m using Hardy 8.04..But it was MY foult: I forgotten to tell them about this..) and (after some hours of work!!) I was able to make the CCU680 working with Linux… The pc recognize the receiver and connect to Cat Telecom. Only… No connection to Internet yet!! Today I wrote again to the C-Motech, and I hope to have some news in few days.
The gpppon it’s NOT working, same as gnome-ppp (they are looking for SERIAL modem or GPRS/UMTS phone connection, but the U680 has a special system, NOT /dev/ttyUSB but /dev/ttyACM0….
Again, the driver from C-Motech is using wvdialconf and wvdial to make the connection…
Please let me know, if and when I will have a good working driver for our receiver, how I can UPLOAD the file, so everybody interested will can use it.

Please do not try to update firmware to CCU650 with CCU680 firmware.
If you try it, then your device does not operate anymore.
The CCU650 supports only 1xEVDO Rev.0.
